Lesson Plan
Compare the United States Bill of Rights with The Universal Declaration of Human Rights
First: Students must have carefully studied the US Bill of Rights, be familiar with content and rights.
Second: Students then examine the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by responding to these questions.
Third: Class discussion comparing the two documents.
Questions to respond to in writing:
1. Look at the date of this document: after what event was it created?
2. Read the Preamble: why was this document deemed necessary by The United Nations?
3. How does this document relate to civil rights?
4, What rights does this document proclaim that are in the U S Bill of Rights?
5, Are there rights proclaimed here that should also be incorporated in our Bill of Rights? If so, what are they?
6. What does this document state regarding marriage? Is the Islamic world in compliance with this?
7. According to this document, who should be the authority of all government?
8. What specifically does this document say about a person’s right to work? Does America follow this philosophy? Does this outlaw sweatshops in the underdeveloped world?
9. What does it state regarding social security and standard of living? Do you agree with this statement? In your opinion, is the world in compliance?
10. According to this document: what should be the purpose of education? For how long must it be provided for free?
11. In your opinion what countries continue to be the most flagrant violators of the intentions stated in this document?
12. Is The USA, with it’s current policy of holding and perhaps torturing detainees at Guantanamo Bay violating this document?
